Dr. Harold Altman has spent more than 30 years treating adolescents, adults, and families. He specializes in emotional and social functioning issues including, anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, ADHD, life-cycle events, parenting issues, academic issues and peer issues.
Dr. Altman also has 25 years of experience with adolescent and adult groups and expertise in group therapy. He runs two weekly groups for adults to address interpersonal, self-esteem, and self-regulatory issues. Members benefit from a supportive and non-judgmental environment to better understand themselves through Dr. Altman’s assessments and guided interaction and intervention with group members.
When working with adolescents, Dr. Altman collaborates with parents and teens to guide them through school difficulties and/or family issues. He reviews previous test results, recommends high school course work and SAT tutors, and assists with college application and essays. He acts as a liaison between adolescents and their schools, physicians, and other professionals to help pave their road to health and well-being.
In addition to a private practice, Dr. Altman is on staff at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and held a teaching position at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (2011–2014) and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (formerly University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) in the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor (co-terminus).
Dr. Altman trained in child/adolescent psychology at St. Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis. He completed four years of postdoctoral work in marriage and family therapy under the supervision of Monica McGoldrick, the renowned family therapist and educator. He has served for 20 years as Chief Psychologist at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center where he remains on staff.
Dr. Altman is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Group Psychotherapy Association, New Jersey Academy of Psychology, and New Jersey Psychological Association.
